South African waters are considered of the best in the world for seeing sharks – Gansbaai is known as the great white capital of the world. Recently local shark diving tours have reported fewer sightings of the animals. Scientists believe this is due to an increase in the number of Orca pods found off SA Waters. Orcas are the only known predators of great white sharks. They are extremely intelligent, specialised hunters that hunt in organised social groups, using echo-location, strategy, and teamwork to kill their prey.
In the past week’s sightings of Great Whites have been lower than normal and our service provider, The White Shark Project, recently gave vouchers to our group of disappointed shark cage divers.
We are happy to report that the Orcas have moved on to new hunting grounds and The Great White Sharks are returning to our waters. A week ago our Divers were awed be sightings of 2 impressive specimens, each more than 2.5 meters in length. The relative absence of the Sharks made this sighting all the more special and is a reminder how vulnerable these animals are.
