Planning the perfect Zambezi Sunset Cruise.

A sunset cruise on the Zambezi River is a premier experience in Victoria Falls, typically lasting 2 to 2.5 hours and offering a unique “water safari” to view hippos, crocodiles, and elephants. Most cruises depart from the Zimbabwean side (Victoria Falls ) or the Zambian side (Livingstone) and include hotel transfers, unlimited drinks, and snacks.

Zambezi River sunset cruises typically depart between 16:00 and 16:30, with departure times adjusted seasonally to align with the changing sunset.  Summer departures (September to April) at at 16.30 while winter departures (May to August) are at 16.00.

There is quite a range of vessels to choose from so here’s a break down of what one can expect.

The largest vessel on the river is the Zambezi Explorer, featuring three decks. The uppermost Signature Deck is the most luxurious, offering gourmet hors d’oeuvres and premium beverages served by a dedicated mixologist.  This is ideal for social group and premium dining for between 80 and 150 pax.

Major luxury ships operating from the Zambian side are The African Queen & African Princess. The African Queen is larger (120 pax), while the Princess is more modern (80 pax). Both offer a “Captain’s Cabin” for private groups of 6–8 people.

The Lady Marilese is a sophisticated cruise vessel featuring an elegant upper lounge, panoramic views, and high-end finishes.

The Zambezi Royal is a single-level luxury boat custom-built for an intimate 5-star experience, serving imported wines and hot canapés to a limited number of guests.

There are also several smaller vessels that provide a quieter, more personal experience and can often navigate narrower channels closer to the wildlife.

The Ra-Ikane is a vintage-style “explorer” boats accommodating only 14–16 guests. It is modelled after the riverboats of David Livingstone’s era, featuring teak and brass finishes, fantastic for history enthusiasts.

The Kalunda is specifically designed for private or highly intimate sunset bookings.

Specially designed jet-propelled boats can access shallow channels and rapids that larger boats cannot reach, providing a closer look at birds and small islands, making them ideal for bird watchers and photographers. Jet boats typically seat between 8 and 12 pax.

The Shearwater Riversong is modern luxury boat designed for intimacy, often featuring a 4-course dinner option.

For the most adventurous and immersive experience, sunset canoe trips allow you to glide silently at eye level with the water.

There are a couple of canoeing option on the Upper Zambezi:- Half-day or “Wine and Wildlife” sunset options where you paddle through the calm waters above the Victoria Falls. These trips often stop on an island for drinks as the sun sets.
